According to the World Health Organization (WHO), human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. It is estimated that approximately 80% of sexually active people will contract HPV at some point in their lives, which can lead to genital warts and other health complications.

Genital warts can be treated, but there is no cure for the underlying HPV infection that causes them. Treatment is aimed at removing visible warts, relieving symptoms, and preventing the spread of the virus to others.

What is genital warts?
Genital warts is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). They are small, flesh-coloured or grey growths that appear on or around the genitals or anus. In men, they can appear on the penis, scrotum, or anus, while in women, they can appear on the vulva, cervix, or anus.
Genital warts can vary in size and shape and can appear as a single wart or in clusters. They are typically painless, but can cause itching, burning, or discomfort, and can sometimes bleed or become irritated. Some people with genital warts may have no visible symptoms, making it possible to transmit the virus to others unknowingly.
Are genital warts contagious?
Genital warts are highly contagious and are spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. They can also be spread through skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the virus, even if they do not have visible warts.
It’s important to note that genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection and should be taken seriously. If you suspect that you may have genital warts, or are concerned about your risk of infection, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional for guidance and treatment options.
What are the symptoms of genital warts?
The physical symptoms of genital warts can vary from person to person, but they typically appear as small, flesh-coloured or grey growths on or around the genitals or anus. These growths may appear as a single wart or in clusters and can vary in size and shape. In men, genital warts can appear on the penis, scrotum, or anus, while in women, they can appear on the vulva, cervix, or anus.
Genital warts can also cause itching, burning, or discomfort in the genital area, and in some cases, they may bleed or become inflamed, leading to discharge or other symptoms. However, it’s worth noting that not everyone with genital warts will experience visible symptoms, and some may carry the virus without developing warts.
When should I get treatment?
If you or your partner(s) have any of the above symptoms, or your partner tells you they have genital warts or another form of an STI, you should either get tested or seek treatment immediately.
At the first sign of an outbreak or one of the symptoms mentioned, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible to prevent symptoms from worsening and spreading, as genital warts are highly contagious.
Can genital warts be treated online?
Yes, a doctor can treat genital warts online based on your symptoms during a virtual consultation. At Contro, men and women over the age of 18 can chat with one of our Partner Doctors about their symptoms and get treatment prescribed and delivered to them.

Genital Warts Treatment

What is the difference between genital warts and genital herpes?
Genital warts and genital herpes are two different sexually transmitted infections caused by different viruses. Genital warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), while genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The physical symptoms of these two infections are also different. Genital warts appear as small, flesh-coloured or grey growths on or around the genitals or anus, while genital herpes causes blister-like sores or ulcers on or around the genitals, anus, or mouth.
Both genital warts and genital herpes are spread through sexual contact, but they differ in their mode of transmission. Genital warts are usually spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, while genital herpes is primarily spread through contact with infected skin or bodily fluids, including saliva, semen, and vaginal secretions.
How much do Contro’s genital warts treatment services cost?
A virtual genital warts consultation with one of our Partner Doctors costs R300. This includes all doctor’s fees, prescription fees and free delivery.

After a successful consultation, cash customers will additionally be charged for their prescribed medication. The treatment price will vary and will depend on which medication(s) your assigned Partner Doctor prescribes you. Our Partner Doctors will always work within your budget and ensure you get the best possible treatment available. The total cost for cash customers is from R600 depending on your diagnosis and prescribed medication.

The total cost for medical aid customers is R300.

Does Contro replace my primary doctor?
No, Contro’s service offering does not replace your primary doctor. We save you time and money by offering you a supplementary online delivery and subscription service, and therefore your assigned Partner Doctor does not replace your primary doctor or GP, and is not responsible for your ongoing primary care.
Can I claim through my medical aid?

Your consultation fee will be charged privately via Contro. After your consultation, you’ll receive an invoice containing the relevant telehealth consultation ICD code, which you can use to submit a claim directly to your medical aid provider.

Medication costs may be claimed on your behalf by our partner pharmacy. Please note that successful claims depend on your specific medical aid and plan benefits, and approval cannot be guaranteed. If a claim is unsuccessful, you’ll be notified and will need to settle the medication cost in cash to proceed.

Alternatively, you’re welcome to pay cash for both your consultation and medication, and use the invoices provided to claim directly from your medical aid provider.

When and how is my medication delivered to me?

Our Partner Doctors offer consultations Monday – Friday excluding public holidays. We aim to offer you a consultation within 2 business days.

During your consultation, your assigned Partner Doctor will ask if you would like to have your medication delivered or if you would like to receive the prescription via email. If you opt for the delivery option, your prescription will be sent electronically to our Partner Pharmacy. Our Partner Pharmacy will contact you telephonically to confirm your details and delivery address and will make a claim on your behalf if you have provided medical aid details.

Their pharmacy team will prepare and despatch your medication to your chosen delivery address. Once your order has been despatched, delivery time is 1-3 business days.

You will receive an SMS from our Partner Pharmacy to notify you that your medication has been despatched. This will contain a tracking number that will allow you to track your medication with the applicable courier service here.

Please note, you cannot change your delivery address once payment has been processed and your prescription has been sent to our Partner Pharmacy for processing.
